Polymarket Top Holders Guide
Last verified: 2026-07-04 PDT
Polymarket top-holder data can show who holds visible size in a market. That is interesting. It is not a shortcut.
A large holder may be early, hedged, wrong, market-making, running a portfolio strategy, or simply taking a view with a different risk limit than you. If you copy the wallet without understanding the market question, liquidity, deadline, and source, you are outsourcing judgment to a number on a screen.
This page is educational. It explains how to use holder data as context, not as an instruction.
Key concepts in plain English
- ▸Top holder: A wallet or account with visible position size in a market.
- ▸Market positions: Data that shows positions for a market or user, depending on endpoint and permissions.
- ▸Open interest: Capital still tied to open positions, different from traded volume.
- ▸Liquidity: The available bids and asks you can actually interact with.
- ▸Copy risk: The danger of copying a visible position without knowing the owner's full book, timing, or plan.
What Polymarket documents support
Polymarket's Data API documentation lists endpoints for top holders, positions for a market, current positions for a user, closed positions, trades, user activity, total value, and leaderboard rankings. The docs identify Data API surfaces as public data for positions, trades, activity, holder data, open interest, leaderboards, and builder analytics.
That data can support research. It still needs context from the Gamma market description, CLOB price/spread/depth data, and the market's resolution rules.
A top-holder review workflow
Before using holder data, write this packet:
Market question:
Outcome reviewed:
Resolution source:
Deadline:
Top-holder concentration:
Recent trade activity:
Open interest:
Best bid / ask:
Visible depth:
Could I exit at a reasonable spread? yes/no
Why holder data matters here:
What would prove this read wrong:
The final two lines matter most. Holder data should sharpen a research question, not become the answer.
Example: concentration versus conviction
If one wallet holds a large share of a thin market, that may look like conviction. It may also mean the market is fragile. If the holder exits, the book may not absorb the size cleanly. If the spread is wide, copying after the fact can mean paying a much worse price than the visible holder paid.
A better interpretation is: "Holder concentration is a risk flag and research lead." Then check rules, recent trades, spread, depth, and correlated markets.
Common mistakes
- ▸Assuming a large position means better information.
- ▸Ignoring when the position was built and at what approximate price.
- ▸Copying size without checking whether the market has enough depth.
- ▸Forgetting that a holder may be hedged in another market.
- ▸Treating leaderboard or holder data as proof instead of context.
Bucko checklist
- ▸Market question and source saved.
- ▸Holder data timestamped.
- ▸Position size compared with visible liquidity.
- ▸Spread and depth checked.
- ▸Recent trades and price history reviewed.
- ▸Correlated markets identified.
- ▸User-defined max-risk cap written before any action.
- ▸Post-resolution review scheduled.
How Bucko fits
Bucko can help turn holder data into a research note: market rules, source links, position snapshots, spread/depth checks, correlation flags, risk caps, and post-resolution lessons. The goal is not to copy a wallet. The goal is to understand the setup.
